Philadelphia born and raised, Hugh Panaro recently played the title
role in the new National touring production of Martin Guerre, by Claude-Michel
Sconberg and Alain Boublil (Les Misérables; Miss Saigon).
He has appeared on Broadway as both Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny and, during
1999, as The Phantom in Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom Of
The Opera. In 1998, Hugh appeared in Sideshow at the Richard
Rodgers Theatre. He played Gaylord Ravenal in Harold Prince's Tony Award
winning revival of Show Boat at the Gershwin Theatre, performing
the role he had played in Toronto prior to the production's being brought
to Broadway. Previously, Hugh was seen on Broadway as Julian Craster
in Jule Styne's latest musical, The Red Shoes. Broadway audiences
may also have seen him as Marius in Les Misérables, reprising
the role which he had originated in The First National Company of Les
Mis.
Off-Broadway credits include Noa Noa at Playwright's Horizons; Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights at The John Houseman Theatre; Children Of Eden and What's A Nice Country Like You... Doing In A State Like This? at the Actor's Playhouse. Regional credits include Don Baker in Butterflies Are Free; William Detweiller in How The Other Half Loves; Henrik in A Little Night Music at both the Walnut Street and Studio Arena Theatres; and Hal in Loot at the Dallas Theatre Center. Mr. Panaro has been a guest artist with the London Sinfonietta, The Utah Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and had the privilege of performing in the world premiere of Penderecki's Te Deum at Carnegie Hall. He can be heard on the Jerome Kern Treasury, recorded for EMI/Angel Records at the famed Abbey Road (of Beatles fame) studios in London. Recently, Hugh appeared in the pre-Broadway workshop production of Alan Mencken and Tim Rice's King David. A graduate of Temple University, he made his first appearance in a feature film, titled Broadway Damage, which was due to be released in the summer of 1997. |
